Thinking about joining the solar revolution and generating your own clean energy? Fantastic! But before you get your panels soaking up the sunshine, there’s one important step: understanding the UK’s grid connection rules. We may talk to you about DNO approval before we can go ahead with getting your new system installed but don’t worry – it’s not as complicated as it sounds!
This guide will shed light on the key regulations and answer any questions you might have about how they affect your solar installation.
Think of your home’s electricity grid as a motorway… Your solar panels are like shiny new cars, eager to join the traffic. But just like any motorway, there are rules to ensure everything runs smoothly and safely. G98, G99, and G100 are like the traffic cones and smart signs that keep things organised!
G98: The Fast Lane For Small Solar Installs
Imagine a dedicated lane for smaller cars on the motorway. That’s G98! If your solar inverter is under 3.68kW per phase (roughly enough to power a small – medium house), you’re cruising in the G98 lane. It’s a simple notification process – GB Solar just let your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) know of your new system, post install. We obtain a connection confirmation record which registers your new connection within the DNO’s network and pass this onto you. Simple!
G99: The Merging Lane for Bigger Players
Now, picture a lane for merging larger vehicles like SUVs and lorries. That’s G99 territory! If your solar system packs a bigger punch (exceeding 3.68kW per phase), you’ll need to take the G99 merge lane. Bigger systems need approval prior to installing and commissioning. It’s a bit more involved, but GB Solar will handle everything for you. We submit a G99 Application to your DNO, along with a diagram of components and connection and await approval from them to join the network. This can take up to 45 working days to obtain, but rest assured we will regularly follow up your applications progress. Once installed, we will also notify your DNO of the commissioning dates and ensure we obtain your connection confirmation records on your behalf.
G100: The Smart Motorway Keeping Everyone Moving
Finally, just like any good motorway has its patrol cars, G100 acts like a smart motorway, keeping the grid moving during times of high and potentially excess generation. Every home, street or estate have slightly differing electrical infrastructures, therefore depending on the capacity of the local network, the DNO may ask us to limit the amount your system can export. If this is the case we will agree this with you prior to arranging your install.
So, how do these rules affect your GB Solar installation?
Rest assured, GB Solar is your expert guide on this journey. We have a dedicated customer accounts manager who will assess your needs, confirm the right lane for your system (G98 or G99), handle all the paperwork and technical adjustments, and ensure your new solar connection seamlessly joins the grid. You can focus on enjoying the energy savings and environmental benefits, knowing your system is playing by the rules.
Remember:
| G98 | G99 | G100 |
| Small systems (under 3.68kW per phase) – simple notification to your DNO. | Bigger systems exceeding 3.68kW per phase – requires application and approval from the DNO. | Sets technical standards for everyone’s safety and smooth energy flow. |
For more detailed information on G98, G99, and G100, you can visit the websites of your local DNO or the Energy Networks Association. And of course, GB Solar is always here to answer any questions you may have!
