What is Solar Water Heating?

Solar Water Heating is a system for heating water using the suns natural energy. Solar energy is collected by a panel, which is connected by pipes to a hot water storage device such as a hot water cylinder.

What if there is no sun or it is a cloudy day?

The latest technology allows the collectors to absorb energy from diffused as well as direct sunlight. This means the panel can still yield results on days when there are clouds in the sky.

What else is government doing to encourage solar water heating systems?

Installed systems currently attract a reduced rate of 5% VAT on both labour and materials. If you choose to carry out the work yourself you will pay the usual rate of 17.5% on materials.

What area does GB solar cover?

GB solar covers the South coast of England. However we are very flexible so if you are interested in a system contact us and we will see if it is possible.

Do I need planning permission?

In most cases, no. However, it is advisable to inform your local authority of your intention to install a solar system. If you live in an area or a building that has any special listing or planning control you will probably need to obtain permission. However, if you have a solar water heating system installed by GB solar we will do this free of charge.

Will my roof be strong enough?

Compared to standard roofing materials the collectors are relatively lightweight and rarely would it be necessary to strengthen a roof structure.

Will it heat my house?

Throughout the year it can provide over 50% of your hot water demands. Obviously throughout the summer it can provide almost all of the hot water heating needs, however a boiler system will also need to be in place as well.

Will it help reduce global climate change?

Yes. For example, compared to conventional electric heating a GB solar heating system could reduce the amount of CO2 emitted on your behalf from a coal fired power station by almost 2 tonnes per year.
